One of Scotland’s most popular and prolific singer-songwriters, James Mackenzie, now based in Berlin, has had a stellar couple of years.

From touring the UK opening for folk rock band Runrig and playing festivals across Scotland – including a much-coveted slot on Belladrum Tartan Heart’s Garden Stage – to playing a 14-date German tour. James has continued to develop his craft by combining strong traditional elements and charismatic vocals with a fresh and credible contemporary swagger.

Initially coming to widespread attention seven years ago fronting ‘James Mackenzie and The Aquascene’, he struck out and started performing solo a year later. An exciting and engaging performer, he has continued to develop this early artistic drive, and now boasts an inventive maturity.

All of this work culminated in a watershed year for James in 2015. The release of EP Winter – described by one critic as “a great showcase for Mackenzie’s warm, husky vocals…truly heartwarming to listen” – led to James receiving the “One to Watch 2015” award from Highland radio station MFR.

Over the years, James has supported established acts, both nationally and internationally like Gallagher and Lyle, SAGA, The Saw Doctors, Hue and Cry, Roddy Woomble and Midge Ure.
