One of the Highlands’ most popular and prolific singer-songwriters, James Mackenzie has enjoyed a stellar 2016.

From touring the UK opening for folk rock superstars Runrig and playing festivals across Scotland – including a much-coveted slot on Belladrum Tartan Heart’s Garden Stage – to the upcoming release of brand new single Until Forever, James has continued to develop his craft and build on an already-impressive CV.

Initially coming to widespread attention six years ago fronting James Mackenzie and The Aquascene, he struck out and started performing solo a year later. A charismatic and engaging performer, he has continued to develop this early artistic drive, and now boasts an inventive maturity. Combining strong traditional elements and unique instrumentation with a fresh and credible contemporary swagger.

All of this work and craft culminated in a watershed year for James in 2015. The release of EP Winter – described by one critic as “a great showcase for Mackenzie’s warm, husky vocals…truly heartwarming to listen” – led to James receiving the “One to Watch 2015” award from Highland radio station MFR.

Over the years, James has supported some of the country’s great artists – Gallagher and Lyle, Hue and Cry, Roddy Woomble and Midge Ure, and has played the Highlands’ most well-known festivals – including XpoNorth, RockNess, Belladrum Tartan Heart Festival, Brew at the Bog, Loopallu and Jocktoberfest.
